Two weeks ago when we moved into a new building, our headteacher asked our staff; What were we all going to do differently in the new building? We were also asked; what were we going to do to reinvent ourselves? Here, you will find a resource ready-to-go for you and your own staff. Today I took a risk leading staff CPD. Previously, in two other schools where I have led whole-school CPD, I have limited the creative options in training sessions for staff.
Perhaps I am at fault for my own set of expectations; plus the context of the school and the school priorities of that time should be kept in mind, but this evening, I led a staff CPD session that was innovative, creative and engaging. Today, we offered teachers time to talk about teaching and drive grassroots pedagogy. Of course staff evaluations may speak for itself. I did ask staff very clearly, that if this session was of no value to them, then they must let me know so that I can ensure that we develop our CPD vision to become more meaningful to them; to have immediate and direct impact in the classroom.

Adjusting tools to fit your own personality, as well as the content, class structure, and student demographics, will increase their potential for success.
Consider logistics like time, space, and materials. Determine how you will frame the activity, what explanations and directions you will offer, and what content students need prior to the activity in order to be successful. Think about using Flipped Teaching, where students access lecture materials through videos or online content prior to class, to free up time for active learning. Explain to students what you are doing and why you are doing it. After the activity, let students discuss the experience with each other and with you.

I this post I share my preparations for this event. Please feel free to use this to help you organise a similar event at your own school or workplace. Each had been asked to bring something to share which they could describe or show another teacher in 30 seconds bring and brag of good practice. Each teacher was given a number, which they wrote on their sheet of paper. How it happened. When we started I began the countdown and the teacher who would move I think it was the teacher sat on my left hand side began discussing what they had brought to share.
After 30 seconds I clapped, signifying the other teacher should begin to discuss what they had brought. After another 30 seconds I hit a wooden block, then one side of the table moved down one seat and started discussing again with the new teacher. This would repeat until we either ran out of time or the moving teachers returned to their original place the latter was achieved. After a few discussions teachers said they wanted longer to discuss, so we changed it to having 45 seconds each.
Each teacher then chose their favourite 3 ideas they had been told about. Teachers really enjoyed having almost an hour to share good practice. All teachers identified things they could use in their own classroom and were positive about the experience. Personally, I felt like I had missed out as I was facilitating this event, when really I would have liked to have taken part.
